Program Description

Code 313 - 60 Credits

The purpose of the Associate in General Studies is to recognize the completion of the requirements for a degree at Kellogg Community College. The requirements in this degree are designed to fulfill the general education core outcomes requirements described in the General Education Core Courses section of this Catalog.

Requirements for the Degree

  1. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours earned, excluding BIOL, TSEN, TSMA, and TSRE courses with numbers less than 100 and MUSI 100 .
  2. A cumulative grade point average at KCC of at least 2.0
  3. A minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours must be completed at Kellogg Community College.
  4. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  5. All Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree must complete the FYS 101 - First-Year Seminar   course with a grade of a C or higher. This degree requirement can also be achieved by earning a degree from an accredited institution or transferring 24 or more credits from another accredited institution applicable to their degree. See an Academic Advisor, or connect with the Integrative Learning Department, for course completion and/or any questions pertaining to the FYS course.

Service-Learning Requirement

Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree will be required to complete a service-learning experience. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement. Please contact an Academic Advisor for courses that offer a service-learning experience, or search in the class schedules.

Michigan Transfer Agreement and Bruin Standard Requirement

Students earning the Associate in General Studies degree must meet the requirements of the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) and the Bruin Standard (General Education) by selecting courses from the lists below.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Graduates will demonstrate effective communication appropriate to audience and purpose.             
  2. Graduates will analyze arguments and evaluate evidence, draw conclusions, make decisions, and solve problems from a variety of perspectives.
  3. Graduates will engage through the exploration of civic, intercultural, and ethical issues, making connections between their knowledge, choices, and actions.

MTA Natural Sciences and General Education Critical Thinking


Students must choose two (2) courses from the MTA Natural Sciences (including one course with a laboratory experience).

MTA Mathematics and General Education Critical Thinking


(May substitute for a higher level mathematics course - refer to the Michigan Transfer Agreement  list.)

MTA Humanities & Fine Arts and General Education Personal & Cultural Engagement


MTA Social Sciences and General Education Personal & Cultural Engagement

Additional courses to achieve the minimum requirement of sixty (60) credit hours earned for this degree are selected at the discretion of the student. Consider course requirements for your major at the transfer institution. Work with a KCC Academic Advisor to select appropriate courses
