  1. An associate degree requires successful completion of a minimum of sixty (60) credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  2. Certificates will be awarded to students who complete the required coursework with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher.
  3. To earn an associate degree, at least fifteen (15) credit hours must be successfully completed at KCC.
  4. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree or certificate may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  5. All associate degrees require successful completion of a minimum of two (2) courses from Effective Communication, one (1) of which must be ENGL 151 ENGL 151H , ENGL 152 , or ENGL 152H , or its equivalent; a minimum of two (2) courses to meet the Critical Thinking requirement, and a minimum of two (2) courses to meet the Personal and Cultural Engagement requirement. Students should refer to their degree program for specific course requirements.
  6. All first-time, degree-seeking, KCC students must complete the FYS 101 - First-Year Seminar  course with a grade of C or higher. See an Academic Advisor for course completion and/or any questions pertaining to the FYS course.

Service-Learning Requirement

Students pursuing an Associate Degree in Arts, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education, General Studies, Global and International Studies, or Science will be required to complete a service-learning experience. Students completing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Trades are encouraged to complete a service-learning experience. Please ask your Academic Advisor which courses incorporate service-learning, or search in class schedules. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement.

The Bruin Standard: General Education Outcomes

The Bruin Standard is the combination of academic General Education outcomes and outcomes met through co-curricular experiences. To demonstrate attainment of the General Education outcomes, all students receiving an associate degree are required to complete courses from the General Education core OR the General Education and Applied Cores. Completion of core courses required for each degree assures that students have met the Bruin Standard (see specific program for information).

As a result of completing the Bruin Standard:

  1. Graduates will demonstrate effective communication appropriate to audience and purpose.
  2. Graduates will analyze arguments and evaluate evidence, draw conclusions, make decisions, and solve problems from a variety of perspectives.
  3. Graduates will engage in explorations of civic, intercultural, and ethical issues, making connections between their knowledge, choices, and actions.

General Education and Applied Core Courses

General education requirements will be met by taking two courses for each outcome; one (1) course must come from the General Education Core, while the second course may come from either the General Education Core or the Applied Core.

General education core courses require a prerequisite Next Gen ACCUPLACER® reading score of 244, or a C in TSRE 55 . It is strongly recommended that students take ENGL 151 - Freshman Composition , or its equivalent, early in their college-level coursework to prepare for writing throughout their college career. Some higher-level mathematics courses could be substituted in specific programs. See your program of study pages for specific course requirements. Be sure to check your transfer and program guides for more explicit directions concerning general education choices. Students seeking Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) should view the 2021-2022 General Education and MTA Chart  .
