GEOG 290 - Explorations in Earth Science

4 CR
A one-semester lecture and hands-on laboratory course devoted to earth system science for the elementary education major. Areas of consideration include earth and space relationship, cartography, weather, climate, structure of earth, plate tectonics, human and environment interactions, and how earth’s spheres interact with one another. Students will learn content they will be expected to teach as a professional elementary educator in the future. [48-32-80}

Requisites: Next Gen ACCUPLACER® Reading score of 244, or TSRE 55  with a grade of C.
Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Explain key concepts of earth and space science as articulated in the Michigan Science Standards for teaching children in grades K-6.
  2. Describe how Earth is comprised of interrelated systems of the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and exosphere.
  3. Describe how human activities impact Earth, and how natural processes impact human activities.
  4. Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of core concepts and principles in foundational earth and space science (preparation for teaching in accord with Next Generation Science Standards).
  5. Interpret and use various representations of earth systems, including models, diagrams, graphs, and basic mathematics, int the context of earth and space science.
  6. Apply scientific concepts, principles, and laws to model, explain, and predict earth amd space phenomena and behavior.
  7. Conduct basic scientific explorations in ways that reflect aspects of science practice, such as formulating questions, designing experiments, careful observing, measuring, analyzing data, interpreting findings, constructing and assessing knowledge claims, and reporting.
  8. Demonstrate effective and appropriate oral and digital science communication.
  9. Develop and communicate practices for planetary sustainability.
