Program Description
Code 255 - 68 Credits
Law enforcement personnel are responsible for conscientiously and ethically preserving order in a community. They resolve conflict, provide emergency services, identify criminal activity and offenders, investigate traffic violations and accidents, and protect constitutional guarantees in a culturally and economically diverse society. Graduates who successfully complete the police academy and pass the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) Certification Examination will be deemed “certifiable.” After becoming certified, the candidate will then have one year to obtain employment with a law enforcement agency within the State of Michigan. It is the hiring agency’s responsibility to activate the candidate’s certification, thus certifying them as a Licensed Law Enforcement Officer. The pre-service recruit who does not obtain employment within the designated time frame qualifies for MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) Program. Passing the RPTE adds an additional year for the pre-service Candidate to become licensed.
