Fine Arts Associate Degree - Music, AFA


FINE ARTS, ASSOCIATE DEGREE, AFA - MUSIC

Program Description

Code 340 - 60 Credits

The Associate Degree of Fine Arts - Music provides a comprehensive foundation of music study. Graduates of the program will earn their MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement) in addition to completion of most of the essential performance, studio, and foundation courses. Whether choosing to diversify skills across multiple areas or concentrate more deeply on specific disciplines, the curriculum is designed to support artistic growth and understanding. For students choosing to transfer to a bachelor-granting institution to study Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degrees, music degrees, applied music performance studies, and music education, among other options, this degree is designed to allow some customization of course options in support of transfer choices. 

Requirements for the Degree

  1. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours earned, excluding BIOL, TSMA and TSRE courses with numbers less than 100 and MUSI 100. A cumulative grade point average at KCC of at least 2.0.
  2. A minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours must be completed at Kellogg Community College.
  3. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  4. All Students who obtain an Associate degree must complete the FYS 101  - First-Year Seminar course with a grade of a C or higher. This degree requirement can also be achieved by earning a degree from an accredited institution or transferring 24 or more credits from another accredited institution applicable to their degree. Service-Learning Requirement

Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree will be required to complete a service-learning experience. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement. Please contact an Academic Advisor for courses that offer a service-learning experience, or search in the class schedules.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Students will demonstrate advanced proficiency in performance across various musical genres, including (but not limited to) classical, jazz, and contemporary, showcasing technical skills and expressive interpretation on the primary instrument.
  2. Students will exhibit mastery in music theory and aural skills, including the ability to analyze complex musical forms, sight-read music, and identify various musical elements such as harmony, rhythm, and texture.
  3. Students will demonstrate a thorough understanding of musical terminology and concepts, enabling them to articulate and apply these concepts effectively in both written and verbal communication about music.
  4. Students will apply creative and analytical skills to organize musical ideas and critique compositions from various styles and genres through written and verbal analysis.
  5. Students will integrate their musical knowledge and skills into broader educational and cultural contexts by designing and implementing music-based educational projects.

Applied individualized music lessons selections: Choose two (2) credits per semester for four (4) semesters for a total of eight (8) credit hours:


Vocal or Instrumental Ensemble selection: Choose one (1) credit per semester for three (3) semesters for a total of three (3) credit hours


It is recommended that students contact the Arts and Communication Department prior to planning and registering for ensemble and individualized lesson selections.

Additional courses to achieve the minimum requirement of sixty (60) credit hours earned for this degree are listed below and selected at the discretion of the student. Consider course requirements for your major at your choice of transfer institution. Work with a KCC Academic Advisor to select twelve (12) credits of appropriate courses.
