Fine Arts Associate Degree - Visual Arts, AFA


Program Description

Code 341 - 60 Credits

The Associate Degree of Fine Arts - Visual arts provides a comprehensive foundation in both traditional and contemporary art forms. This program allows students to explore a wide range of disciplines and materials, from traditional to new media. Graduates of the program will earn their MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement) in addition to completion of most of the essential studio art and survey foundation courses. Whether they choose to diversify their skills across multiple areas or concentrate more deeply on specific disciplines, the curriculum is designed to support artistic growth and understanding. This program prepares students for success in the field of art and design, or transfer to most four-year institutions’ baccalaureate art and design programs. 

Requirements for the Degree

  1. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours earned excluding courses with numbers less than 100, and MUSI 100.
  2. A cumulative grade point average at KCC of at least 2.0.
  3. A minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours must be completed at Kellogg Community College.
  4. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  5. All Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree must complete the FYS 101  course with a grade of a C or higher. This degree requirement can also be achieved by earning a degree from an accredited institution or transferring 24 or more credits from another accredited institution applicable to their degree. Service-Learning Requirement

Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree will be required to complete a service-learning experience. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement. Please contact an Academic Advisor for courses that offer a service-learning experience, or search in the class schedules.

Michigan Transfer Agreement and Bruin Standard Requirement

Students earning the Associate of Fine Arts degree must meet the requirements of the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) and the Bruin Standard (General Education) by selecting courses from the lists below.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Demonstrate technical capabilities and understanding of traditional studio art foundations.
  2. Analyze and interpret historical and contemporary art movements and connect these to current studio art and design practices to demonstrate an understanding of visual literacy.
  3. Exhibit competency in the creation of cohesive projects using a broad range of traditional to contemporary media skills.
  4. Demonstrate foundational skills and knowledge required for success in the field of art and design, or entry into a range of studio art and design baccalaureate programs.
