Program Description

Code 178 - 16 Credits

The Community Paramedic Certification program provides specialized training for healthcare professionals seeking to excel in emergency medical services and community healthcare. Through an in-depth curriculum, hands-on clinical experience, and strategic partnerships, students gain the expertise needed to address critical healthcare needs in diverse communities. Community Paramedics play a vital role in bridging the gap between traditional EMS services and community healthcare by offering proactive healthcare services, such as wellness checks, chronic disease management, and preventive care, directly within communities. This program equips students with the skills to serve as healthcare liaisons, improving access to care and enhancing community health outcomes. A current Paramedic License is required for this program.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. By the end of the program, students will be able to explain the foundational principles and core concepts of Community Paramedicine within the healthcare system, emphasizing their role in enhancing community and patient well-being while upholding principles of social accountability.
  2. By program completion, students will be able to conduct a needs assessment, analyze distinct patient and community needs, and formulate evidence-based strategies to address these needs, enhance quality of life, and implement preventive measures, all while ensuring the provision of optimal palliative care.
  3. By program completion, students will consistently demonstrate critical thinking skills through reflective practices and integrate research findings into their professional practice as Community Paramedics.
  4. By program completion, students will assess and manage the implications of basic and instrumental activities of daily living within community settings, identifying potential risks and opportunities to enhance the quality of life for patients while effectively evaluating and managing the progress and effectiveness of palliative care and treatment interventions.
  5. By program completion, students will engage in collaborative practices by working effectively with healthcare professionals and community stakeholders. They will develop a holistic approach to patient care, focusing on wellness promotion and improved health outcomes within the community context.

Allied Health and Nursing programs require formal program admissions and approval from the department. Allied Health students need to meet access requirements which may include drug screenings and criminal background checks.

All EMS students should contact the EMS coordinator for information about certifications.
