Industrial Machining Technology, AAS

Program Description

Code 252 - 60 Credits

Nearly every sector of the manufacturing industry is dependent upon people with specialized machining technology training including automotive, aerospace, medical supply, furniture, metals/metal products, plastics, machinery, and even the newly developing renewable energy sector. These people work with designers to make fixtures, dies, molds and other parts that support the manufacturing process.

The Industrial Machining Technology core curriculum at Kellogg Community College prepares students to make these parts. Students may pursue either a Certificate or an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Machining Technology.

Modules within the curriculum cover:

  • Blueprint Reading
  • CAM and CNC Programming
  • Drill Press and Band Saws
  • Electronic Discharge Machining
  • Layout Tools
  • Machinery’s Handbook
  • Machining Technology Projects
  • Mathematics
  • Precision Measurement
  • Safety
  • Surface and Cylindrical Grinding
  • Turning
  • Vertical/Horizontal Milling

In order to earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Machining Technology students must complete sixty (60) credits. These credits must be taken from three categories: core curriculum, general education electives, and technical electives.

Service-Learning Requirement

Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree will be required to complete a service-learning experience. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement. Please contact an Academic Advisor for courses that offer a service-learning experience, or search in the class schedules.

Modular Format

Industrial Trades curricula are offered in a non-traditional, modular format. Module descriptions are not listed in the catalog. For more information about Industrial Trades modules go to the Industrial Trades page at https://kellogg.edu/academics/areas-of-study/manufacturing-skilled-trades-applied-technology/machining/.

Industrial Trades Orientation

All students interested in taking Industrial Trades modules must complete one or more core curriculum orientation. The orientation is a core curriculum prerequisite. Students will not be able to register for modules until the orientation is completed.

Program Learning Outcomes

  1. Technical/Equipment: Program graduates will demonstrate the technical knowledge and skills required to use industry equipment appropriately for employment in the field of Industrial Machining.
  2. Safety: Program graduates will demonstrate safety protocols in the field of Industrial Machining by consistently applying and adhering to current industry safety standards.
  3. Problem Solving: Program graduates will demonstrate the ability to use a variety of techniques in solving problems presented in the field of Industrial Machining.
  4. Communication: Industrial Machining program graduates will effectively communicate the technical content of the field, both written and orally.

Required General Education Courses

All Students who obtain an Associate degree or an Associate of Applied Science degree must complete the FYS 101 - First-Year Seminar   course with a grade of a C or higher. This degree requirement can also be achieved by earning a degree from an accredited institution or transferring 24 or more credits from another accredited institution applicable to their degree. See an Academic Advisor, or connect with the Integrative Learning Department, for course completion and/or any questions pertaining to the FYS course.

Industrial Machining Modules

Students must complete thirty (30) credits in the Industrial Machining Technology core curriculum. For more information about Industrial Technology modules go to the Industrial Trades page at https://kellogg.edu/academics/areas-of-study/manufacturing-skilled-trades-applied-technology/machining/.

Unit 05 - Machine Tool Basics

Unit 10 - Machine Tool Safety
