Program Description

Code 311 - 60 Credits

Code 311A (online) - 60 Credits

The Associate Degree in Arts is designed for students preparing to transfer to a four-year institution. The requirements in this degree are designed to fulfill the general education core outcome requirements described in the General Education Core Courses section of this Catalog.

Requirements for the Degree

  1. A minimum of sixty (60) credit hours earned, excluding BIOL, TSEN, TSMA, TSRE courses with numbers less than 100, and MUSI 100 .
  2. A cumulative grade point average at KCC of at least 2.0.
  3. A minimum of fifteen (15) credit hours must be completed at Kellogg Community College.
  4. A maximum of 75% of the credit hours required for a degree may be documented and transferred to KCC.
  5. All first-time, degree-seeking, KCC students must complete the FYS 101 - First-Year Seminar  course with a grade of C or higher. See an Academic Advisor for course completion and/or any questions pertaining to the FYS course.

Online Programs

The Associate in Arts, Associates of Applied Science in Accounting, Administrative Assistant, Business Management, and Early Childhood Education are available as fully online programs. The Early Childhood Education program requires field experiences that are not offered online. Please see the Online Programs or Program Maps webpages for further information about the coursework required to complete these online programs.

Service-Learning Requirement

Students pursuing an Associate Degree in Agricultural Science, Arts, Criminal Justice, Elementary Education, General Studies, Global and International Studies, or Science will be required to complete a service-learning experience. Students completing an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Industrial Trades are encouraged to complete a service-learning experience. Please ask your Academic Advisor which courses incorporate service-learning, or search in class schedules. The final grade in the course must qualify for academic credit in order to receive the service-learning endorsement.

Michigan Transfer Agreement and Bruin Standard Requirement

Students earning the Associate in Arts degree must meet the requirements of the Michigan Transfer Agreement (MTA) and the Bruin Standard (General Education) by selecting courses from the lists below.

Program Learning Outcomes


  1. Communication: Students will demonstrate effective interpersonal communication skills through critical listening and reading, through coherent, clear written and oral work appropriate to audience and task.
  2. Critical Thinking/Analytical Reasoning/Creativity: Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze and evaluate information and identify the need for research to draw conclusions, formulate inferences, solve problems, and make decisions.
  3. Cultural/Social Awareness: Students will develop awareness and understanding of cultural ad social diversity, examine historical and contemporary cultural traits impacting their civil society at the local, national, and global level and recognize how the diversity of individuals and/or groups impacts social, economic, and/or political power.
  4. Engagement/Service Learning: Students will understand the interactions between members of a community and the social and political institutions that serve that community.  Students will analyze their ability to effect change through social and civic responsibilities and enhance their learning by applying course content through service experience in the community.
  5. Scientific Reasoning: By applying the scientific method to form hypotheses, make decisions, and solve problems, students will demonstrate quantitative scientific literacy and understanding of the process of scientific inquiry.
  6. Information Literacy: Students will demonstrate the ability to locate, organize, store, retrieve, evaluate, synthesize, annotate, and document information from print, electronic, and other sources in preparation for solving problems, making informed decisions, and preparing the written/oral communication necessary for academic and career success.
