SPMT 222 - Introduction to Sports Management

This course will take you into the acclaimed world of sports. As we survey the sport industry, we will learn concepts to help you have a successful and fulfilling experience in advance sport studies. This course will explore the history of sport management, organizational and behavioral foundations of business, as well as the socio-economical drivers that impact the industry and our communities. You will be able to explore marketing, finance, public relations, media, and other roles from a sports perspective to help you assess your fit in this industry.

Requisites: Next Gen ACCUPLACER® reading score of 244, or at least a grade of C in TSRE 55  . 
Course Learning Outcomes:
1. Gain a basic understanding about the administration of sport management.
a.    Identify the major business and market structures that allowed sport business to develop.
b.    Explain issues that influence the sport business industry.
c.    Define sport and sport sociology and discuss the social, political, and economic significance of sports in our society.
d.    Define and discuss professional sports.
e.    Define and discuss intercollegiate sports.

2. Understand procedures and practices common on the field of sport management.
a.    Identify legal and ethical issues affecting sport management.
b.    Explain the role, scope, and impact of sport management and marketing agencies.
c.    Discuss the similarities and differences between event and facility management.  
d.  Describe organizational behavior in the context of the sport industry and explain its importance in sport management.

3. Gain an insight into the skills necessary to pursue a career in sport management.
a.    Review the psychology of consumer behavior related to sports.
b.    Relate the theories of economics to the sport industry.
c.    Recognize the role of marketing and public relations in sport management.
d.    Explain the nature and scope of management & leadership and differentiate between the two.
