CRJU 240 - Criminal Law and Procedures 4 CR The study of substantive criminal law and procedures as a means of defining and preserving social order. Including the nature and scope of police power, the concept of exclusion; laws of arrest, search, seizure, and interrogation; the acquisition of evidence, and judicial protection of the accused will be evaluated. Sources of criminal law; classification crimes against persons, property, and public welfare; principles of criminal liability; elements necessary to establish a crime and criminal intent; specific crimes and defenses; and constitutional limitations are also examined.
Course Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of 4th Amendment search and seizure protections and acceptations applicable to law enforcement officers.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the elements that make up specific criminal offenses.
- Demonstrate an ability to apply scenario-based facts to the elements of a criminal offense and determine the appropriate crime committed.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and Miranda applicable to law enforcement officers.
- Students will know how the court system is structured and understand the step-by-step process of a criminal court case.
