CRJU 240 - Criminal Law and Procedures

4 CR
The study of substantive criminal law and procedures as a means of defining and preserving social order. Including the nature and scope of police power, the concept of exclusion; laws of arrest, search, seizure, and interrogation; the acquisition of evidence, and judicial protection of the accused will be evaluated. Sources of criminal law; classification crimes against persons, property, and public welfare; principles of criminal liability; elements necessary to establish a crime and criminal intent; specific crimes and defenses; and constitutional limitations are also examined.  

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of 4th Amendment search and seizure protections and acceptations applicable to law enforcement officers.
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements that make up specific criminal offenses.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to apply scenario-based facts to the elements of a criminal offense and determine the appropriate crime committed.
  4. Demonstrate a working knowledge of 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination and Miranda applicable to law enforcement officers.
  5. Students will know how the court system is structured and understand the step-by-step process of a criminal court case.
