MATH 102 - Practical Algebra 4 CR This course is designed for students pursuing a field of study outside of mathematics, science, and engineering. The mathematical application will be an emphasis and real-life applications will be presented in disciplinary and career context when appropriate. Topics include a review of operations with integers and rational numbers, ratios and proportions, percent, solutions of linear and quadratic equations, graphs of linear and exponential functions, linear and exponential models, introduction to data, and measures of central tendency.
Requisites: Next Gen ACCUPLACER® arithmetic score of at least 200, or Next Gen ACCUPLACER® quantitative reason score of at least 225, or TSMA 45 with at least a grade of C. Course Learning Outcomes:
- Perform operations and order of operations with real numbers, exponents, and negative exponents.
- Measure and convert units of length, weight, and volume in both the Metric and US systems of measure.
- Develop algebraic problem-solving strategies and apply these strategies to real-world situations.
- Recognize proportional relationships in real-world settings and apply proportional reasoning to determine an accurate conclusion.
- Develop mathematical models that describe real-world, linear relationships and use these models to extrapolate and create graphs that describe these relationships.
