ECE 260 - Positive Relationships with Families

3 CR
Students learn how to establish and maintain positive relationships with diverse families of young children. Effective communication strategies are emphasized encouraging equal partnerships with families. Advocacy for families is explored. This course is based on NAEYC standards of child development practices.

Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Create experiences that foster parent and child interactions during the formative years through the use of the child’s home language and cultural practices in the home.
  2. Compare effective and non-effective family relationships assessing the strengths of different family structures.
  3. Explain how family relationships affect early childhood education for young children.
  4. Contrast resources available for parents on the Internet.
  5. Discriminate among effective communication techniques for families of young children.
  6. Respect all families and demonstrate that respect among peers.
  7. Advocate for families in a proactive way.
  8. Plan an effective parent-school conference, parent-school literacy night, and an effective plan for a parent-teacher home visit.
  9. Analyze parent handbooks from child care centers for effective and welcoming programming.
