SERV 200 - Service-Learning 3 CR This course examines volunteerism from historical and contemporary perspectives. It provides students with an opportunity to study and experience volunteerism in the community and to discover how communities address issues with diverse populations. This course has as its major objective the encouragement of critical thinking and practical experiences with respect to the concepts of citizenship and social responsibility. The course requires students to participate in a community-based service-learning project and to complement their community work with written and oral reflections.
Requisites: Next Gen ACCUPLACER® reading score of 244, or at least a grade of C in TSRE 55 . General Education Requirement: Personal and Cultural Engagement - General Education Core Michigan Transfer Agreement Requirement: Humanities and Fine Arts Course Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate civic engagement in a local community organization.
- Acquire leadership skills with community members and volunteers at an advanced level defined by service-learning principles.
- Evaluate the service-learning project based on personal goals and service-learning objectives.
- Reflect and support diverse and vulnerable populations through service-learning.
- Relate the concept of citizenship in a global community to service-learning.
