PTA 221 - Clinical Experience

1 CR
Weekly sessions will be spent in area health settings where the student will have an opportunity to apply in the clinical setting those skills developed in earlier course work. Treatment and patient care will be carried out under the supervision of qualified physical therapists and/or physical therapist assistants. Emphasis will also be placed on observing and reporting patients’ response to treatment. An ongoing journal of student clinical experiences is required. Lab Fee

Additional Information: Formal admission to the Physical Therapist Assistant Program required. Criminal background check and CPR certification must be current anytime the student is in the clinical setting. 


Requisites: Take EMT 110 , PTA 120 , PTA 121 , and PTA 122  with at least a grade of C.

Corequisite: PTA 220 .


Course Learning Outcomes:
  1. Generate patient interventions within the plan of care of the supervising physical therapist and under the supervision of the designated clinical instructor in the area(s) of physical therapy modalities, therapeutic exercise, and/or pre-established functional activities.
  2. Analyze and report patient response to treatment.
  3. Demonstrate concern for the needs of the patient.
  4. Produce effective communication in oral, written, and non-verbal forms.
  5. Execute single intervention procedures in a reasonable period of time.
  6. Implement satisfactory environmental conditions while in the clinic.
  7. Integrate teamwork and cooperation in the clinical setting.
  8. Demonstrate responsible professional behavior for this initial level of clinical experience as a Student Physical Therapist Assistant.
